Vanderheyden Celebrates Opening of Sanctuary Trail
Made Possible by Funding From CDPHP® Workforce Team Challenge, presented by
CDPHP and the Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club

Wynantskill, NY – In early January we submitted an application to the 2017 CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge Charity of Choice for a vision of developing a trail that would have therapeutic value for our individuals, as well as the community.  Our campus is on 80 acres but its indoor space is very limited.  However, its wooded backyard is a tremendous asset and has gone underutilized because of funds. Late January, we received the fantastic news from the CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge that the project we submitted was accepted as a charity of choice. The Sanctuary Trail would become a reality with donations from a race of 10,000 participants that took place in May in Albany.

There were many corporate volunteers, individual volunteers, team members and our individuals, that assisted in clearing the trail, planting flowers, spreading mulch/gravel and moved over a thousand stones.  These stones also mark the way to our Sanctuary flower.  This flower is an interactive representation of our seven commitments of our Sanctuary model that represents a theory-based, trauma-informed, evidence-supported, whole-culture approach, which helps to build a safe environment where emotional and psychological healing can occur.

Karen Carpenter Palumbo, President and CEO of Vanderheyden says, “I am extremely thrilled and appreciative of the generosity of the running teams that donated over $14,000 to our vision of a Sanctuary Trail to heal the body and mind in the way that nature can create. This Trail, quite simply, would not exist without the funds and the volunteers. Thank you for the opportunity from the CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge, Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club and the many volunteers for the support in assisting us to change lives to save lives.”

Today we celebrate the initial opening of the Trail with CDPHP, Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club, our partners, the communityand team members. We will continue the work-in-process of the ongoing beautification of the Sanctuary Trail as we connect miles of nature.
