VANDERHEYDEN IS RECIPIENT OF $52K GRANT FROM IICF

TO ENHANCE READING PROGRAMS

Wynantskill, NY — Vanderheyden’s Richard A. Desrochers Educational Center was recently awarded a $52,000 grant from the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) Northeast Division, to enhance the school’s READ 180 reading program and to institute the SYSTEM 44 program.

Vanderheyden recognizes the needs of our students to receive additional reading interventions including decoding, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension that is offered in the READ 180 program.  The SYSTEM 44 program will benefit students who struggle the most and who need urgent intervention, with specialization in basic phonics, decoding, and foundational reading skills.

“We are very grateful to IICF for this grant and their investment in the future of our youth.  The grant will certainly make a real difference in their lives,” Karen Carpenter Palumbo, President and CEO of Vanderheyden said.  “Ensuring that our students can read provides them the best opportunity for future success in the workforce and community citizenship.”

The grant will be used to implement the SYSTEM 44 program, and to purchase materials to enhance the READ 180 program, such as iPads, computers, a SMART board, audio books, head sets, microphones, printers, consumable workbooks, and a separate summer reading program that augments READ 180.
