VANDERHEYDEN CELEBRATES NATIONAL DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL WEEK SEPTEMBER 13 – 19, 2015

A Direct Support Professional (DSPs) is the backbone in many human service organizations. It is a person who assists an individual with a disability to lead a self-directed life and contribute to the community, assists with activities of daily living, and encourages attitudes and behaviors that enhance community inclusion.

Direct Support Professional is the greatest resources within our service system for so many of our individuals with emotional disruption and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities. “I salute those Direct Support Professionals that work tirelessly every day of the year administering skilled and compassionate care to the individuals we serve,” said CEO, Karen Carpenter Palumbo.  “I commend the important work carried out by our DSPs that allows our individuals to stay connected with their community and their families.”  In honor of their constant dedication, Vanderheyden is celebrating in a variety of ways such as gift cards, ice cream sundaes, lunch, fruit baskets, posters and letters of appreciation.

Direct Support Professionals are key to transforming care delivery to a system of highly individualized and integrated support.  Our DSPs have deep ethical commitment, effective independent judgment and the skills to effect and measure personal outcomes for people with disabilities.  We are fortunate that our Direct Support Professionals rise to this challenge every day and play a crucial role in improving services for the individuals that Vanderheyden serves.

Vanderheyden began as the Troy Orphan Asylum in 1833. Today Vanderheyden provides a safe haven for children, youth and individuals who have experienced family disruption, emotional difficulty, developmental disabilities and learning problems. Services include diagnostic/respite services, education for 7-12th grade students, residential cottages and group homes, and testing/treatment for medical, psychological, psychiatric and educational issues.
