Mikie came to Vanderheyden in 2007, where staff member Becky first taught him how to play softball during recreation time. He developed a passion for the sport and eventually joined the Special Olympics softball team in New York. In 2026, Mikie boarded a plane for the first time to travel with his team to compete in Minnesota. After a dominant run through the tournament, the team found themselves facing a significant deficit in the final game. They fought their way back to win, with Mikie making a diving catch in the outfield during the final inning. The victory secured first place and a gold medal for Mikie and his teammates. Today, Mikie lives in Vanderheyden’s Community Services Supportive Apartment Program.
